Some highlights from today’s Daughter of the Lilies update!
Thanks for sending in so many questions, dear readers! Here are some I wanted to answer but didn’t have time to get to:
- Which is harder, that rock or your head? (Answer: let’s hit him with it and find out.)
- What is your pain tolerance? You’re complaining a lot more about (previously mentioned) rock than that massive bite in your arm. (Answer: Brent complains more about his hurt pride than any part of his hurt body.)
- Are you an idiot or just a jerk? (Answer: both.)
- What do you think of Thistle? Do you get along? (Answer: Meh.)
- How long have you been working in the Mercenary business? (Answer: a long time.)
- How does one grow muttonchops as glorious as yours? (Answer: Maybe he’s born with them. Or maybe its just Maybelene. Or patience.)
- What is your favorite kind of book to read? (Answer: all of them.)
- What is your fondest childhood memory? (SPOILERS SHHH)
- How is magic categorized and what is your favorite kind? (Answer: this would take too long.)
Maybe at the end of the next chapter I can actually get to answering these - but in the meantime I have a ton of comic pages to work on!
I am saving that quote to answer every question I don't want to answer.
Is utterly hilarious. XD
...Life as an author with characters has gotten so much worse since I changed to human. I don't get no respect no more.
One of my favorite aspects is the cartoony way you've drawn yourself here. It's adorable. XD I like the round shape of the face, and how that makes the big, open-mouthed expressions even stronger. Which I think it a great choice because it makes the goofy, silly, always-disrespected-by-your-characters reactions even more fun! I like the smiling faces, but my favorite expressions of your you are the "You know what? Don't answer that." one and the terrified expression you have as Orrig grabs you by the collar and your frantically, desperately flailing to get away. They make me laugh and smile!
I like Thistle's expressions. We see so little of her face, that apart from her eyes, her body language has to communicate a lot to compensate. Which is really interesting! On the one hand, having her face shadowed by her hood and mask makes her eyes pop a little more -- you see a lot of polite, eagerness in her eyes when you first call on her, a really knowledgeable look as she closes them answering you, and most potently the sad look in her eyes when she passes on her other question breaks your heart. And like I said, the body language does a lot, too -- seeing her shoulders slump in that sad "panel" pulls so much weight in making it feel sad; and the way her head tilts a bit as she looks up to the side as you've called on her makes me imagine that she's perked up and straightened up in reaction to being called on. So yeah, it was really interesting to see how strongly her emotions come through even though so much of her face is shrouded.
I also love the expressions on the group's face when Orrig starts telling his story! The pain and agony and "GROAN NO" in their faces is awesome. XD Those eyes on Thistle hold so much terror, and the way Lyra hunches forward as her eyes sag and her mouth hangs open as she looks up has this desperate exasperation that feels so strong. And more importantly, makes me giggle at her agony. X3
And Orrig is fun! I like his expression and pose as he starts telling his story! He looks so pleased and excited to tell it, and it's made even more effective after seeing him being pretty...uninterested up to that point.
But yeah! This is super fun and cute and silly. Great job! : )
Yeah, this is the first time I've actually started feeling really comfortable with this new way of drawing myself. I'm glad that a lot of the stuff I was trying to get across actually did - especially with the design and everything else. Making Thistle so expressive with so little to use is tricky but fun - it's interesting to try and solve a lot of those creative problems when there's a really complex emotion that doesn't have any words or dialogue to help clarify it.
Orrig is one of those characters that is still surprising me the more I learn about him. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite guys!
Between finding really great ways to make Thistle amazingly expressive, and what you said about Orrig and everything, it sounds like you're having a lot of fun drawing these guys. That's awesome. : )
This story has been really weird because since some people already know what happens and there's spoiler art still floating around out there, it's hard not to just post stuff, but I don't want to spoil anything! Aaa!
I hope you found them satisfactory at least!
Thank you for including my question though! And glad to see Orrig did (eventually) let you go.
Hahahaha, oh this is great
You managed to get through one hell of a funny FAQ session... and hardly answering any questions
